Prenatal Paternity Testing
Beta Paternity gives you a special option to determine paternity for an unborn baby when you need to know as soon as possible. Prenatal testing can be performed using samples taken by an OB-GYN during the 10th to 24th weeks of pregnancy.
Both the mother and alleged father need to submit buccal (cheek) swabs for the DNA test. The baby’s DNA profile will be compared to those of the mother and alleged father to determine paternity.
Prenatal testing uses one of two methods for collecting samples from the mother, depending on how far along she is in the pregnancy:
Chorionic Villi Sampling (CVS) is performed during the 10th through the 13th weeks of pregnancy. In this procedure, a physician uses a catheter through the vagina or a long, hollow needle through the abdomen to obtain cells from the baby’s placenta. The method used depends on the baby’s position in the uterus.
Amniocentesis is performed during the 14th through the 24th weeks of pregnancy. In this procedure, a physician uses a needle through the abdomen to extract some amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. This fluid contains cells that the baby has shed during development.
Prenatal sample collection can be performed by the mother’s OB-GYN, or we can arrange for sample collection through our OB-GYN referral service. The OB-GYN charges an additional fee for the collection, which patients pay directly to the doctor at the time of the CVS or amniocentesis. Some patients may prefer to wait until the baby is born to save on sample costs. You can use the Beta Self-Collection™ kit to safely collect samples from the baby at birth.
